Answer

What does job work mean for discrete manufacturers?

Job work (subcontracting) is when a plant sends material or semi-finished goods to an outside vendor for a process — cutting, machining, plating, painting, galvanising — then receives the processed quantity back. The operational record is the challan, pending balance, scrap and receipt tied to the parent work order. Statutory GST returns such as ITC-04 are separate obligations handled with your CA and official GST systems; FOS ERP tracks the operational challan and reconciliation workflow and does not claim to file ITC-04 unless that capability is separately verified and configured.

Manufacturing example

A structural fabricator issues 1.2 tonnes of beams to a galvaniser on a delivery challan linked to work order WO-4821. Two days later 1.15 tonnes return; 50 kg is scrap. Stores receives against the same challan so WIP and landed processing cost stay on the job.

Inputs

Parent work order, vendor, process, material quantity, challan / e-Way details when required.

Outputs

Pending vendor stock, receipt quantity, scrap, charges posted to the job when configured.

Related terms

Work order, WIP, GRN, e-Way Bill.

Frequently asked questions.

Top questions about job work manufacturing — answered for manufacturers in India.

Is job work the same as subcontracting?

In discrete manufacturing they usually mean the same operational idea: outside processes with material issued and received against a parent job. Statutory GST language may use “job work” specifically — confirm filing language with your CA.

Does FOS ERP file ITC-04?

Do not assume that. FOS tracks operational challans and reconciliation. Statutory ITC-04 filing is a compliance process with official GST systems and your CA unless a verified filing integration is documented for your tenant.

Which FOS module covers job work?

The Subcontracting module, linked to Production, Inventory and Purchase. See /modules/subcontracting.

What documents typically move with job work?

Delivery challans, and e-Way Bills when movement thresholds apply. Exact statutory forms depend on current GST rules — verify with official sources and your CA.
