Answer

What is a bill of materials (BOM)?

A bill of materials (BOM) is the structured list of components, quantities and levels required to make a finished good or assembly. Multi-level BOMs nest sub-assemblies so planning, stores and production share one product structure. Revision control matters when drawings change after an order is won.

Manufacturing example

A machine-tool builder maintains an engineering BOM for a special-purpose machine: fabricated base, bought-out spindle, electrical panel and pneumatics. When the customer revises the panel layout, a new BOM revision is effectivity-dated so open work orders do not silently consume obsolete parts.

Inputs

Item masters, quantities, units, scrap factors when used, revision / effectivity rules.

Outputs

Exploded demand for MRP, material lists for work orders, cost roll-ups when configured.

Related terms

MRP, routing, engineering change, work order.

Frequently asked questions.

Top questions about bill of materials — answered for manufacturers in India.

What is a multi-level BOM?

A structure where assemblies contain sub-assemblies and components, so explosion nests demand level by level.

Why do BOM revisions matter?

Drawing changes after order win can leave stores issuing obsolete parts unless the active revision is controlled.

Where does FOS manage BOMs?

BOM management is part of planning for discrete builds — see /bom-management-software and /modules/planning-mrp.

Is a BOM the same as a routing?

No. The BOM is what to consume; the routing is where / in what sequence operations run.
